Is virtual colonoscopy ready for widespread use?
No, the technique is still in development even though several clinical manuscripts have been published. Part of the problem is that the technique depends largely on the post-processing hardware and software and many institutions currently use different experimental software packages. The learning curve is long and, currently, few academic radiologists have the experience necessary. Also, technical improvement such as CT scanner resolution and oral and intravenous contrast agents are still being evaluated. —Jonathan B. Kruskal, MD, PhD
